COVID-19 Vaccinations

COVID-19 Vaccinations

Employers have a responsibility and duty of care to provide a safe and healthy work environment for all workers, visitors, clients, customers, and other personnel connected to their business especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While employers continue to manage the health and safety risks associated with the spread of COVID-19, uncertainty remains about whether an employer can require their employees to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

See HR Law’s recent article (click here) for information about whether an employer can mandate that employees have the COVID-19 vaccination.

For the moment, employers should ensure they have appropriate controls in place to protect employees from the risks associated with COVID-19 while working.  We’ve included best practice recommendations below:

  • Ensure 1.5m social distancing is adhered to
  • Ensure masks are worn as directed by Government authorities and where 1.5m social distancing cannot be adhered to
  • Consider travel arrangements and avoid carpooling with other co-workers
  • Stagger employee arrival and departures at the work location
  • Create separate entrance and exit walkways at the work location
  • Implement hygiene practices (i.e. hand washing, regular cleaning, hand sanitiser, etc.)
  • Use personal protective equipment where necessary (i.e. gloves, masks, etc.)
  • Implementing a COVID Safe Plan and Checklist where required
  • If unwell, stay home
  • Work from home where possible or as required from Government authorities
  • Provide training on health and safety protocols
  • Where exposure to COVID-19 may have occurred, employers should promptly identify and isolate potentially infectious individuals
  • if an employee develops signs or symptoms of COVID-19 at the workplace, an employer should send the employee home or to seek medical care
