  • Micromanagement: Autonomy and trust are key drivers of boosting employee morale. When management observes and/or controls the work of their employees too closely, the employees can resent the lack of responsibility and autonomy. Accordingly, leaders should internally motivate employees to invest in their work by giving employees appropriate space to do their work and encouraging them to pursue professional development.
  • Lack of transparency: Leaders should keep their team in the loop, share information freely, and invite open communication within the company. By showing a willingness to be open and honest with employees, leaders can establish teamwork and mutual trust among all organisational levels. However, where there is lack of transparency, there can be unpleasant surprises and concerns around uncertainty.
  • Lack of accountability: Leaders should hold themselves accountable for the outcomes of any project or task their team delivers. Sometimes, this may mean leaders will have to acknowledge their own failures – not providing enough resources for the task, not communicating effectively, not giving clear expectations, etc. When leaders do not account for their actions, trust and respect may be shattered, causing employees to resent their leaders. Accordingly, leaders must account for their actions (or lack thereof), accept responsibility for them, and disclose results to their team is transparent manner.

 

What does it take to be a good leader?

  • Have reasonable expectations: There is a difference between high expectations and unreasonable expectations. Leaders should ensure that expectations are kept high, but also attainable. To ensure this, leaders should have strong communication with their team by asking whether their work is obtainable, there are adequate resources to complete the task and whether deadlines need to be adjusted to meet these concerns.
  • Communicate effectively: Strong communication is an integral part of effective leadership. Without it, leaders cannot share the company’s goals, mission or strategy to achieve them. To achieve this, leaders should identify and address the root causes of any communication inadequacies in the workplace. From there, leaders should encourage direct and open discussions, be clear about expectations, listen to all employees and initiate difficult (but needed) conversations.
  • Be flexible: Leaders need to respond to changing circumstances and expectations. While mishaps and last-minute changes will always occur at work, leaders should accept these changes in stride and solve problems creatively.
