Post - Shiftworkers

Generally speaking, a shiftworker is defined as an employee who works fixed hours of work (i.e. shifts or rosters) that are outside or partly outside of their normal working hours.

It is important to note that modern awards typically provide a specific definition of a shiftworker. With that being said, it is important for employers to refer to the relevant modern award to determine if an employee is considered a shiftworker.

Further, if an employee is considered a shiftworker, the following may be affected:

· Hours of work; or

· Meal breaks and/or rest breaks; or

· Shift allowances and penalty rates; or

· Annual leave entitlements.
